What this means for you

Known donor (private arrangement)

A friend, acquaintance, or someone met through a donor-matching community donates, often via home insemination or a clinic-assisted procedure. He isn't automatically a legal parent — that only happens if he formally acknowledges the child — but a written donor agreement covering contact, involvement, and financial expectations is strongly recommended before conception, even though it isn't fully binding in family court.

Clinic donor via IUI (the KID subsidy route)

Insemination with a registered clinic donor's sperm. Because not having a male partner isn't treated as a medical indication, this isn't covered by standard basic insurance — instead, a dedicated government subsidy (Subsidieregeling KID) funds up to 12 IUI attempts for women without a male partner, through 1 January 2030, for a small one-time clinic contribution. Donor sperm itself (from a Dutch or international sperm bank) is always a separate out-of-pocket cost.

IVF with donor sperm

If IUI isn't succeeding or there's an additional fertility factor (age, egg quality, a diagnosed condition), IVF with donor sperm is the next step. If there's a qualifying medical diagnosis, the IVF portion may be covered under standard basic insurance (three attempts up to age 42); donor sperm cost remains separate regardless.

Key considerations

As a single mother by choice, you're automatically your child's sole legal parent at birth if the donor never formally acknowledges the child — there's no adoption or extra legal step required on your side, unlike the more complex rules that apply to a second parent in a couple.
Anonymous donation has been banned in the Netherlands since 2004 — all donors are registered, and your child can request identifying donor information from age 16, which is worth being prepared to discuss openly as they grow up.
The KID subsidy scheme is current government policy running through 1 January 2030, not a permanent guarantee — worth confirming current terms directly with a clinic when you start.
If you choose a known donor over a clinic donor, a written agreement — even though not fully binding — is the single most effective way to avoid later disputes about involvement and expectations.
