Using a known donor instead means she doesn't become a legal parent automatically: if married or partnered, she can acknowledge the child before birth to become a legal parent from birth onward; otherwise she must acknowledge or adopt after birth, and whichever adult acts first — the donor or the co-mother — determines who ends up as the child's second legal parent.

Registered clinic donor + IUI/IVF (married or registered partnership)

The simplest legal route. With a registered clinic (anonymous) donor confirmed via the DKB, the non-birthing partner becomes a legal parent automatically at birth, once the couple submits a legal parenthood declaration when registering the birth — no adoption or separate acknowledgement procedure needed.

Known donor (married or registered partnership)

A friend, family member, or someone found through a donor-matching community donates. The non-birthing partner doesn't become a legal parent automatically here — but if the couple is married or in a registered partnership, she can acknowledge the child before birth and become a legal parent from birth onward, provided she does this before the donor acknowledges the child himself.

Known donor (not married or registered partnership)

Without marriage or a registered partnership, the non-birthing partner must acknowledge the child after birth, or adopt, to become a legal parent — a slower process than the pre-birth acknowledgement available to married/partnered couples, and one where getting legal advice early matters even more.

Key considerations

Marital or registered-partnership status is the single biggest factor in how fast and how automatically the non-birthing partner secures legal parenthood — worth settling before choosing a donor route, not after.
Counter-intuitively, the anonymous/clinic donor route is legally simpler for the second parent than a known donor route, even though a known donor often feels like the more natural choice for couples who want their child to know their donor.
If a known donor acknowledges the child before the co-mother does, she can no longer become a legal parent via acknowledgement — the Netherlands caps legal parenthood at two people, so timing genuinely matters.
Since neither partner is a male partner in the medical sense, standard basic insurance doesn't cover IUI/IVF with donor sperm — a separate subsidy (Subsidieregeling KID) funds up to 12 IUI attempts instead, through 1 January 2030; donor sperm itself is always a separate cost.
