Co-Parent vs Known Donor in Canada: Which Path Is Right for You

A co-parent shares legal custody, day-to-day parenting, and financial responsibility for a child; a known donor provides genetic material and, in most of Canada, is not automatically a legal parent if a written pre-conception agreement is in place — the biggest practical differences are ongoing involvement and legal status, and in Ontario or BC, a pre-conception agreement can name more than two people as legal parents from birth, which isn't possible for either role in most other countries.
