
A Baby Born in Athens From an Embryo Frozen for 22 Years
Both of the couple's children were conceived on the same day in 2004 and born 22 years apart. The transfer happened inside a two-and-a-half-month legal window.
On 9 September 2026, a 54-year-old woman in Athens gave birth to a daughter from an embryo that had been cryopreserved on 17 March 2004 and transferred on 23 December 2025 — roughly 22 years and 5 months in storage. The embryo came from the same IVF cycle that produced the couple's son, who was killed in a road crash in October 2025 at the age of 21. It is not the longest-stored embryo ever to result in a birth; that record belongs to a 2025 case in Ohio involving an embryo frozen for more than 31 years. What is genuinely unusual here is that both of this couple's children were conceived in the same cycle, on the same day, and born 22 years apart — and that the mother reached the transfer inside a narrow window before Greece's legal age limit for fertility treatment closed.
What happened
In 2004, Cristina Rapti-Tzelepi and Constantinos Raptis went through IVF at a private centre in Athens, using her eggs and his sperm. The cycle worked. Their son, Giorgos, was born nine months later. The surplus embryos from that same cycle were frozen, and there they stayed — through the whole of their son's childhood, his adolescence, and his adult life.
In October 2025, Giorgos was killed in a road crash. He was 21.
Two months later, on 23 December 2025, one of the embryos created alongside him in 2004 was thawed and transferred. Their daughter was born on 9 September 2026 at a private maternity clinic in Athens, weighing 3.49 kg. They named her Georgia.
“We decided to give life a second chance, to make a new start, bring new life into our home and keep our family's story going,” the mother told reporters after the birth, as reported by the Associated Press.
It is not a world record — and that is the less interesting part
Several outlets described the birth as a record. Strictly, it isn't. In July 2025, a boy was born in Ohio from an embryo frozen in 1994 — 31 years and 56 days in storage, recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest-stored embryo to result in a birth, taking the title from the Ridgeway twins born in 2022 after 30 years and 192 days.
But the Ohio case and the Athens case are not really the same kind of story. The Ohio embryo was donated by a stranger, decades after the people who created it had finished building their own family. In Athens, the couple used their own embryo, from their own cycle, to have a second child who is the full genetic sibling of the first — conceived in the same laboratory dish, on the same day, born 22 years apart.
That distinction matters more than the number of years. It is what turns this from a cryobiology milestone into a family-building one.
Does an embryo age while it is frozen?
Not in the way a person does. Embryos are stored in liquid nitrogen at about −196°C. At that temperature biological activity effectively stops: no metabolism, no cell division, no accumulating damage. The clock that matters was already stopped in 2004.
What determines the odds is the condition of the embryo before it went into storage — above all, how old the woman was when the eggs were retrieved. In this case, the eggs were retrieved when she was in her early thirties. The embryo transferred in December 2025 carried the biology of a 32-year-old's egg, not a 54-year-old's.
Registry studies to date have generally not found that longer storage by itself reduces live-birth rates, although most published data covers storage measured in years rather than decades — cases like this one are still rare enough to be news. The risks that do rise with the mother's age at transfer are the pregnancy risks: hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, preterm birth. Those attach to the person carrying the pregnancy, not to the embryo.
The part that matters outside Greece: the deadline
The embryo had no deadline. The mother did.
Greek law (Law 4958/2022) raised the upper age limit for medically assisted reproduction from 50 to 54. Between 50 and 54, a woman needs a special permit from the National Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction, with medical certification that she can carry a pregnancy to term. At 54 plus one day, the route closes entirely.
“I only had a 2½-month window,” Rapti-Tzelepi said. “It was stressful, but with inner strength and our doctor and his whole team by our side, we got through every obstacle.”
Her doctor has since argued publicly that the cut-off should be revisited. “The law is very strict: 54 plus one day is not allowed,” Pantos told reporters. “Maybe it's time for it to change.”
This is the underlying tension the case exposes, and it has nothing to do with Greece specifically. Freezing separates the moment an embryo is created from the moment it can be used. National law puts that decision back on the calendar — tied not to the embryo, but to the age of the person who will carry it.
