Age gap has traditionally mattered for reproduction mainly because one partner's egg supply is finite and declines with age — a large age gap could mean the relationship's reproductive window was constrained by whoever had less biological time left, usually the female partner. That specific pressure is measurably shrinking: egg freezing adoption is growing fast (the average freezing age dropped from 37 to 35 between 2016 and 2023, with live birth rates up to 70% when frozen young enough), donor options are more accessible and better understood than a generation ago, and further out, in vitro gametogenesis research could eventually decouple genetic age from chronological age entirely — though that part remains research-stage, not available.
